Thomas D. Brock is E.B. Fred Professor of Natural
Sciences-Emeritus
at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his Ph.D. in botany
and microbiology from Ohio State University. Since the mid-1960s, he
has
done field research in Yellowstone and from 1966-1975 maintained a
laboratory
at West Yellowstone, Montana. With numerous students and postdoctoral
associates,
he has carried out a wide range of research studies on the biology and
geochemistry of Yellowstone thermal systems. He is the author or
co-author
of over 250 research papers and over 20 books, including Thermophilic
Microorganisms and Life at High Temperatures (1978), which
describes
his research work in Yellowstone.
